Course Description:

Power A/C and Distribution Systems:

3 phase power, Delta, Wye Power Safety, AC Distribution, ground loops, using meters, wire size vs. current, 120V vs. 240V troubleshooting P.A. systems.

Amps and Speakers:

Amps, power supplies, how amps work, power requirements and amplifier classifications.
Speakers, magnets, voice coils, direct radiator, acoustic loading and time alignment of components, raw components, cabinets, vented enclosures,
Hearing: Basic psychoacoustics, inverse Square Law, the decibel - combining multiple speakers, their components and basic acoustics.

Microphones, Consoles, Effects, and Crossovers:

Microphones: Polar patterns and how they specifically pertain to instrumentation.
Crossovers: Basic filter types, active and passive crossovers.
Effects: Graphic equalizers, digital delay applications and special live sound applications.
Consoles: Basic applications, gain control, routing, grouping, VCAs, sub-masters, masters and summing amps.

FOH Mixer, positioning, tuning the sound system, getting a mix and Interfacing with
media and recording trucks.

Tech Riders: what they are, setting up for a festival, entertainment management.
Stagehands: Understanding union and nonunion stagehands,
Life on the Road: The “do’s” and “don’ts” within company guidelines.

Study of Three Basic Systems, Stadium, Arena and Sheds:

Understanding stadium systems, arena systems, shed systems and delayed systems. Included will be a brief discussion of sound systems in Theaters, hotels, fairs, festivals and single speaker systems.
